Members contribute a small amount each month. Every contribution routes to the person currently at the front of an open queue. An open queue, in the order people joined, visible to everybody.
the whole idea
Somebody walks up to a stranger and hands them what they need. They do not ask what went wrong, or whether it was their own fault, or whether the story is even true. They do not know if they are being put on. They give anyway, and that is the whole of it.
Given freely, in the strict sense of the word. Nothing is owed back, no condition is attached to it, and nobody has to make a case for themselves before it arrives.
Rally is that, with a queue instead of a chance encounter.
That is a choice, not an oversight. Rally confirms who a person is, because money has to reach somebody real. It never confirms what happened to them. Nobody documents their illness, proves an eviction, or explains how they let it get this bad.
Anything open enough to help quickly is open enough to be used. Rally does not check stories in advance, because a process strict enough to catch every liar mostly catches the people with the least paperwork, and those are usually the ones in the worst trouble. So some will get through. Rally does not go looking for lies, and it does not ignore one it is shown: a claim proven false gets the request removed.
Somebody will ask for something you think they could have gone without. They will get it, in the order they arrived, the same as everyone else. Deciding whose reasons are good enough is the thing this was built to stop doing.
Rally asks one thing of anybody who joins the queue: tell the truth. Not a truth that would impress a panel. The real reason, whatever it is, however ordinary it sounds written down.
Nearly everybody will, because nearly everybody does. Some will not, and that has a cost: money meant for somebody in trouble reaching somebody who was not. That is a real loss and it will happen.
Rally carries that cost on purpose. Avoiding it would mean sitting in judgment on whose crisis is real, whose reason is dire enough, and whose account of their own life to believe. That is not a job a website should hold, and it is not one anybody should want. Being occasionally wrong about a stranger is the cheaper mistake, and the kinder one.
Two things, and neither is about whether you deserve it. Who you are, verified by Stripe, because money has to land in a real account belonging to a real person. And a short list of things Rally will not fund, all of them about what is legal or whose debt it is. Not one line of it asks whether your reasons are good enough. Read the list.
where this came from
Somebody covers a stranger’s rent. Hands over the cash for a car repair so a person can get to work on Monday. Quietly pays for the groceries the woman in front of them was putting back one at a time. Millions of people watch these. Why is not obvious, and it is probably not one reason. What is easier to say is what stands in the way of doing it yourself, if you ever wanted to. You do not know who needs it. You cannot tell who is telling the truth. And doing it in a way that actually reaches somebody, more than once, is harder than it sounds.
Every one of those has the same thing built into it. To be helped, you had to be found. Somebody with a camera had to come across you, on a day they were filming. That is not a criticism of anybody doing it, it is just what the format is: before anything else, it selects for being findable.
Who that leaves out is not something Rally can tell you, and it would be making it up if it tried. Nobody can see who is not in the frame. What Rally can do is not use that filter at all.
The same thing, without needing to be found and without anybody deciding you are worth it. You put your own name down, and your place is where you arrived, not where somebody ranked you. What reaches you was given freely, so you receive it the same way: nothing to repay, and nothing to prove.
It costs $3 a month, which is not much on its own. Whether it adds up to anything depends entirely on how many people are doing it, and that number is on the queue page rather than something to take on faith.

before anything else
$3 is the size of thing that leaves without a decision being made about it. The coffee nobody finishes. The change that lives in a car door. A subscription that renews for a year before anybody gets round to cancelling it. Money that is gone either way, and mostly without being noticed.
The only difference here is where it lands. It does not get spread thin across a hundred causes. It goes to one person, whole, alongside everybody else’s.
And for some people $3 is not nothing. Rally is not going to pretend otherwise, and that is exactly why contributing is never a condition of asking. The queue is open to anybody, whether they have ever put in a penny or not.
Your contribution passes through Rally’s Stripe account and out to the person at the front of the queue, in the moment the charge clears. It does go through Rally on the way. What Rally never does is choose where it lands. The order people arrived in does that.

Sent to their own Stripe account about a week later. It waits in Rally’s balance first, because a card payment can be reversed long after it clears, and Rally has no say in where it goes either way.

Building it, running it, and covering disputes out of Rally’s own share rather than anybody else’s. This is what makes Rally sustainable rather than a favour that burns out.

Stripe takes this to move the money. Rally never sees it. The figure is their published rate; the exact amount is whatever they charge on the day.
This space fills the moment somebody asks. Until then Rally is not charging anybody, because it does not take money it cannot pass on.
This is the part people push back on, so it is worth saying plainly. Contributing is never a condition of asking for help. Paying in is an invitation, not a toll, and the people most likely to need Rally are the least likely to have three dollars a month spare.
If paying in were what made you eligible, contributions would be buying a future payout. That is the shape of an insurance premium, and it would put Rally in a category it is not built for and cannot afford to be in.
Rally does not sort real needs from unworthy ones. There is a short list of things it will not fund, all of them about what is legal, what is true, or whose debt it is. Everything else belongs in the queue.
Before money reaches anyone, Stripe verifies their legal name, date of birth, address, tax identification, and a bank account in their own name. The check is on who they are, not on whether their situation is sad enough.
Some of what gets funded here will be things you would not have chosen. That is what giving to a stranger has always meant, and designing it away would leave something else entirely. Read what Rally funds.
Being clear about this protects you and it protects Rally. None of it is hedging. It is the actual shape of the thing.
Contributing buys you nothing. It does not make you eligible to receive, it does not move you up, and no amount is promised to anyone. Asking is open to anybody with an account, whether they contribute or not.
You are not buying anything that returns money. Your contribution goes to a person, and that is the whole of it.
Nothing about who gets funded is left to chance. The order is the order people joined, and you can check it yourself.
Giving through Rally is generous, but it is not a registered nonprofit, so it does not work like a donation at tax time. Money received through Rally may also count as income for the person who receives it.
the fine line
Every limit above answers to something real. Moving money for other people needs a licence. Paying in for a future payout is insurance. Deciding who deserves charity is regulated on its own. Rally is built around those rather than around what would be easiest, and the awkward parts are the reason it can exist at all.

what it has to answer to
Rally is shaped so that none of these describe it. That is the whole design, not a disclaimer at the bottom of it.
Nobody is contributing yet. Rally funds nothing a month, so right now this is an idea with a queue attached.
The idea does not need a crowd to be true. The help does. It takes about 208 people contributing before Rally can put $1,000 in somebody’s hands inside three months, and every one of them raises what the person after them can ask for.
The most anybody can ask for today is $2,500. See how that number is worked out.

$3 is the smallest contribution, not the only one. You can raise yours whenever you want, and Rally’s own cut stays at $1 a month no matter what you choose. Everything above that, beyond what the card network takes, reaches the person being funded. At $10 a month that is $8.41 to them.
If nobody is in the queue, there is nobody for your contribution to reach, so Rally stops collecting it and emails you to say so. When somebody joins, you get another email before billing starts again. Rally does not take money it cannot pass on, and it does not hold it for a recipient who does not exist yet.
